Wine broker Cathy Bentley-Smith, creator of newly formed Wineaux Times invites wine loving friends to take part in Fireside Fridays at the beautiful Hotel Los Gatos beginning on Mar 2.
Santa Cruz Mountain wines featured
Taste the best locally produced wines paired with rich, delectable chocolates. Featured in March are Burrell School Winery, Silver Mountain Vineyards, The Mountain Winery and Villa Del Monte. Each week different varietals will be sampled. Tasting fee is $15.
How Wineaux was formed
While Bentley-Smith was taking classes in winemaking at Cabrillo College she met a group of like-minded people who soon became known as The Wineaux. “And that’s where it all began,” she says.
They pooled their money and made four barrels of wine: Zinfandel, Syrah, Pinot and a Zin/Carignane blend. Because they all met at Cabrillo they began by calling themselves the Cabrillo Crushers and in 2010 made 14 barrels, including Zinfandel, Cab Franc, Pinot, Montepulciano, Petite Sirah, and a Cab Franc/Zin blend. They also invested in a bottling line, crusher/de-stemmer and new barrels.
During the summer of 2011, they entered their 2009 Zinfandel, 2010 Cabernet Franc and 2010 Pinot into the Santa Cruz County Fair amateur competition. They won a Double Gold medal for the Zin, Silver for Cab Franc and Bronze for the Pinot. “There is nothing stopping them now,” she writes on the Wineaux Times site.
