Santa Cruz local farms offer family fun

It is good to know where your food comes from and even better to visit where it comes from. We are fortunate to have three local farms offering up regular educational, social and edible events.

Live Earth Farm, Watsonville

Live Earth Farm holds classes, tours, potlucks, and a Discovery Program where kids can learn about local, organic and sustainable food systems.  LEF Calendar of Events lists their upcoming workshops and monthly gatherings. Every third Tuesday of the month, kids 0-3 are invited to attend Wee Ones--it's never too early to learn about life on the farm! Starting in April, L.Ac, Herbalist Darren Huckle is teaching a three-part Herbal Education Series (Herbs of Live Earth, Herbal Basics of Stress Management, and Herbal Preparations).  LEF also has CSA deliveries with weekly seasonal produce.

Gizdich Ranch, Watsonville

Gizdich Ranch has an open door policy when it comes to visiting and they are also very kid-friendly. They offer seasonal Pik-Yor-Self events where one can pick apples or berries to their heart's content. Self-guided tours of the orchard and berry farms are available or one can schedule a tour and learn about juice pressing. On site is a popular bake shop with farm-fresh pies, deli, and other goods.

Pie Ranch, Pescadero

Pie Ranch is the place to go for a good old-fashioned barn dance. On the third Saturday of each month, Pie Ranch hosts a Community Work Day, potluck dinner and dance in their roadside barn. Farm tours, youth education programs, internships and apprenticeships are also available.

Visiting local farms is a fun and delicious way to show your support for local farming and keeps us in touch with members of the community who share an appreciation for good food and good health.
