Looking for a fun yet educational experience? The Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History is the perfect daytrip for everyone: couples, families, and even curious individuals can observe and learn new facts about plants and animals.

Whalebones, live butterflies and mammoth fossils—what more could you ask for in a museum? Admission is $10 for adults and $6 for children, but on the last Sunday of each month, the museum is free to the public.

At the entrance to the museum lies a 72-foot long Blue Whale skeleton, assembled perfectly to take photos. A rare treasure, this skeleton is one of five complete Blue Whale skeletons in the United States. The museum also has an art gallery and permanent exhibits about Native Americans, fossils, marine life, birds, and insects.

A number of exciting seasonal exhibits are also offered, such as Butterflies Alive! Guests can enter a pavilion full of more than 1,000 butterflies, where they are free to photograph, touch, and feed the butterflies. Oftentimes butterflies land on museum goers’ shirts, which provides a great photo opportunity.

Currently on exhibit are fossils of the Moorpark Southern Mammoth, the first mammoth species to cross the Bering land bridge from Asia into North America almost 2 million years ago. If the mammoth were alive today, it would be 12-feet tall and have 9-foot long tusks.
