Need a quick escape from LA? Think the sunny shores of Santa Barbara. And, while you’re at it, consider taking the train. The Santa Barbara Car Free Project is offering a 20 percent discount on the Amtrak rides up the coast when you register at www.SantaBarbaraCarFree.org. The train takes you right to town where you can stroll along the main drag to restaurants, bars, shops and boutiques.
The savings is good on Amtrak Pacific Surfliner ®and San Joaquin® (and linked buses) to and from all nine Amtrak stations in Santa Barbara County (Santa Barbara, Goleta, Carpinteria, Solvang, Buellton, Lompoc, Surf, and Guadalupe & Santa Maria). The offer is good through 16, 2014 and requires a three-day advance purchase.
Says Mary Byrd, manager of the award-winning project at the Santa Barbara County Air Pollution Control District, “Take a vacation from your car and discover what you can see car free. Instead of sitting in your vehicle staring at the road ahead of you, you’ll be on the train, looking out the window at surf, sky and mountains; your vacation has already begun. Then when you arrive at the train station in Santa Barbara, you are just two blocks from the beach, in the heart of the city surrounded by hotels, wine tasting rooms, restaurants, art galleries and unlimited possibilities to relax and renew.”
Taking the train saves gas, wear and tear on y our nerves and gets you within walking distance of the city or the beach. You might want to schedule your visit during the annual film festival (see video).
