Sanjaya Malakar: Jennifer Lopez 'really honest' on 'American Idol' (VIDEO)

When Sanjaya Malakar met Jennifer Lopez during season six of 'American Idol,' little did he realize that J-Lo would eventually become a judge on the hit Fox TV show?  Sanjaya sat down for an interview with PopEater to talk about 'Idol' when the subject of Jennifer Lopez came up.

Watch the Entire Sanjaya PopEater interview here!

Sanjaya was a lightning rod performer who had some people scratching their heads as to how he got as far into the competition (he finished in 7th place).  In the interview, he was asked about Jennifer Lopez and her reaction to having to cut Chris Medina from the competition.  J-Lo broke down after having to tell Medina that he did not advance to the final 24 of this season's 'Idol.'   Sanjaya was sympathetic for Jennifer's situation:

"I can't imagine how hard it must be" now that the judges are getting invested in the performers, he tells us. "You see them, and you're paying attention to them and their story and how they're progressing each week. I'm sure it's really hard to cut someone that you like…especially someone with a story like that. I think it shows a really honest perspective of her. She was one of my mentors on my season, and she was such a sweetheart."

So, Sanjaya confirms what Fox is trying to portray of Jennifer Lopez.  She really is likeable and has real feelings.  It also shows how difficult these 'American Idol' decisions are, especially for a performer who for the first time is on 'the other side of the table.'  Clearly Jennifer Lopez is a far cry (no pun intended) from cold, Simon Cowell.

I have never been a fan of JLo, however, after seeing her personality on Idol I have become a huge fan. I never dreamed she had such a big heart and an even bigger conscience. She is a refreshing change from Simon. I think she is a good fit with Randy and Steven. What a great balance she provides among the other two judges.
Tyler is also a breath of fresh air and is kind of a middle of the road kinda guy (Yes), Randy the tough one and Jennifer the softy. Best Idol year ever!!

Completely agree.... as a professional singer myself, really is a breath of fresh air.

I never would have figured J-Lo to be that type of an emotional judge either. She had a rep beforehand of being really cold, and it seems this week she proved otherwise. I do disagree about Simon Cowell being cold, though. From what past contestants have said, Simon was always there after they go kicked off wishing them well and offering help wherever he could. I do worry about J-Lo's longevity. Ellen DeGeneres left after the last season as she had a hard time giving honest critiques. Right now it seems J-Lo is heading down that same path.
