Sanitization

How many of my fellow journalists have shared this frustrating experience?

Recently, I discovered what I considered to be an important clue in the Penn State Sex Scandal story.

I was semi-retired from my writing career at the time so I tried to give the story to CNN.  They were non-pulsed.

Next I offered it to the Pittsburgh Post Gazette. I have free-lanced there in the past and thought that if they would let me submit the story, I would be enticed back into the fold.  They were also unenchanted with my scoop.  This is my Post Gazette portfolio.

Examiner.com had been encouraging me to resume my writing on the site.  So even though the Penn State story is does not exactly belong under Pittsburgh History, I decided to post what I believe is an important story, Another suicide at Penn State.

Sanitization (Wikipedia) is the process of removing sensitive information from a document or other medium, so that it may be distributed to a broader audience. When dealing with classified information, sanitization attempts to reduce the document's classification level, possibly yielding an unclassified document. Originally, the term sanitization was applied to printed documents; it has since been extended to apply to computer media and the problem of data remanence as well.

Redaction generally refers to the editing or blacking out of text in a document, or to the result of such an effort. It is intended to allow the selective disclosure of information in a document while keeping other parts of the document secret. Typically the result is a document that is suitable for publication, or for dissemination to others than the intended audience of the original document. For example, when a document is subpoenaed in a court case, information not specifically relevant to the case at hand is often redacted.

And though slow to catch on, my story is gaining traction.  Just today, it was read on JimmyChurchRadio.com.

On Monday, I will publish the nail biting story of the night that Jimmy Church broke the Penn State sex scandal story.

Jimmy said, "When I got the Grand Jury report in my hands that morning, I didn't know if it was real. I didn't know what to do with it."

"We searched all of the big news outlets like CNN, ESPN and Fox and there there was nothing at all about Sandusky, Paterno or Penn State."
