Newtown, Connecticut is more than 1,000 miles away from Huntsville, but area residents have been eager to help the grief-stricken town. Now runners are rallying to do their part.
Fleet Feet announced on Facebook Friday it is hosting the Sandy Hook Distance Run on Saturday, February 2, at 8 a.m. There will be a $25 donation fee that will assist victims of the deadly shooting last month at the Sandy Hook Elementary School. The shooting spree claimed the lives of 20 young students, four teachers, a school counselor and the principal.
The gunman, Ryan Lanza, also took his own life and had killed his mother before he went to Sandy Hook.
Last week, children of Sandy Hook Elementary returned to school at another location just a few miles from the massacre. Families and residents in the tight-knit community are still devastated by the tragedy, as are people around the world.
The Sandy Hook Distance Run will provide another means of helping for runners and walkers in Huntsville and surrounding areas. It will begin at the Hampton Cove Middle School and wind along a scenic, relatively flat route. Runners and walkers can choose their desired distances, from 5K to marathon.
