Newtown 911 calls: Frightening 911 calls to be released today

Newtown 911 calls from the Sandy Hook tragedy are being released after Connecticut State’s Attorney Stephen Sedensky decided to drop his case to keep the calls private. On Dec. 3, the Christian Science Monitor reported that Sedensky will no longer appeal the case after a judge ordered the release of these recordings. The 911 calls are scheduled to be released to the public today at 2 p.m.

"From all accounts, the recordings are harrowing. Dispatchers received the first 911 call just after 9:35 a.m., and the first officer arrived less than four minutes later. But by then, a gunman, Adam Lanza, had already shot and killed 20 first-grade students and six adults," the Christian Science Monitor reports.

The Newtown 911 calls will undoubtedly be hard to listen to. However, the judge who presided over the case explained that the tapes had to be released because 911 tapes are a matter of public record. Although the judge did say that the tapes would be "a searing reminder of the horror and pain of that awful day," their release couldn't be put off any longer.

Hearing the 911 calls is going to be hard for so many people. Parents of Sandy Hook students are perhaps the most bothered by the release of these tapes -- but once they are out, they're out... and hopefully the parents can continue their healing process without further stress.

Will you listen to the Newtown 911 calls? Do you think it's wrong that they are being released to the public? Why or why not?
