Why would a 75-year-old grandmother in Michigan shoot her 17-year-old grandson three times in the chest, once in the stomach, and once in the arm?
Sandra Layne’s attorney, Jerome Sabbota, said Layne shot and killed her favorite grandson because she was afraid of him.
Jonathan Hoffman, the grandson, had a troubled past. An autopsy even revealed he had synthetic marijuana in his body, according to the Huffington Post.
Hoffman attended an alternative high school and was once “pulled over in nearby Farmington Hills and ticketed for possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. He later received a 93-day suspended sentence and was placed on 12 months' probation.”
On Tuesday, a prosecutor informed jurors that the 17-year-old called 911 when his grandmother shot him and he begged the dispatcher to send help.
Paul Walton, Oakland County's chief assistant prosecutor, explained that Layne shot the teen while he was on the phone on May 18, 2012.
Officers had been to Layne’s condo two months before the shooting. They were “called to the home northwest of Detroit about two months earlier, when Layne told police she was having a difficult time because her grandson was very upset and yelling. No arrests were made that day.”
Now this grandmother is on trial for first-degree murder.
