Sandra Bullock wins best Actress and a woman takes home the Oscar for best director

It was truly a night of firsts at the Academy Awards, the yearly spectacle began as usual on a red carpet runway flooded by stars and media. The show itself however ended with big awards for Actress Sandra Bullock and Director Kathryn Bigelow.

Bullock (pictured at left), a long loved actress who's been paying her dues in Hollywood for 20 years, broke out with her role as the fiercely loving mother in The Blind Side. Bullock received the award for best actress whilst looking rather statuesque herself in a beautiful gold dress.

Bigelow (pictured at bottom) won the Oscar for best director for her work on The Hurt Locker, a compelling story about the highly volatile life led by the members the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) squad in Iraq.  Bigelow is the first woman to win an Academy Award for best director, The Hurt Locker also won best picture.

There were plenty of other great stories this year, amongst them the quick rising star of best actress nominee Gabourey Sidibe and the hilarious comic styling’s of the award shows two fabulous hosts, but simply put, its about time Sandra Bullock won herself an Oscar, and a women won for best director.

Congratulations to all the nominees and winners of this year’s Academy Awards, and bravo to all the fabulous stylists who created a feast for the eyes and moments of stunning memory for today’s award recipients to look back upon.
