Spring is almost here, summer is approaching, and what is better to do than spend time outdoors enjoying the gifts of Mother Nature. San Jose Municipal Rose Garden is a gem hidden amongs residential areas but do not let it fool you: this place is well worth checking out, and likely more than once.
The garden represents 5.5 acres of space devoted solely to roses. Once a prune orchard, the space was bought by San Jose in 1927 and was turned into a beautiful rose garden. On April 7, 1931 the President of the American Rose Society, J. Horace McFarland and John McLaren, famed architect of Golden Gate Park, broke ground at the Garden. Nowdays, it features more than 3,500 shrubs representing 189 rose varieties.
On August 12, 2010 San Jose Municipial Rose Garden was named "America's Best Rose Garden", in the first nationwide contest of its kind. The winnner was selected based on beauty, creativity and community involvement.
The garden keeps its beauty thanks to the help of volunteers who dedicate their time to preserving this local attraction in its best.
