San Jose mother admits to making up abduction story

A woman who reported that her daughter was the victim of an attempted kidnapping may be facing charges herself after police learned she’d fabricated the story.

The unidentified mother called 911 at about 5:30 p.m. Tuesday to report that a stranger had tried to abduct her 2-year-old daughter. She said the suspect had grabbed the toddler by the ankles and tried to take her from her mother’s arms. Police arrived and canvassed the area, but the suspect was not located.

The woman worked with police to develop a sketch, which police then released to the media.

Today, police say, the woman admitted in an interview with detectives that she had made the story up and there was no abductor. At this time, police haven’t figured out a reason for the lie.

The investigation is ongoing and will be reviewed by the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office for possible charges of filing a false police report.
