Since 1996 the Festival of Lights has been an annual event in Costa Rica, when the municipality of San Jose organized the first parade. This year it will be celebrated on Saturday, Dec. 10, 2011. The festivities will take place between 6:00 p.m. and midnight. The location is between the National Gymnasium and the Plaza de la Democracia which is Paseo Colon and Avenida Segunda.
The festival features a mascarade show, marching bands, fireworks and incredible floats. The float sponsors are a who’s who of some of the biggest companies doing business in Costa Rica, they include such names as: Banco de Costa Rica, Children’s Hospital, Claro, Coco-Cola, Florida Bebidas, Glaxon Smith Kline, ICE, Importador Monge, Infocoop, Kobi, Liberia Universal, Movistar, RECOPE, and San Jose Municipality. Awards are given for the best floats.
The bands also feature Community, High School and Primary school bands. Awards are given for the bands as well.
It is well advised to arrive early. It is also suggested that you consider using public transportation as parking in the area may be somewhat limited.
