San Joaquin Community Hospital uses ‘old technology’ in cutting edge expansion

A delivery and communications system that has existed for nearly two centuries continues to adapt to the demands of a state-of-the-art Bakersfield, Calif., hospital. The system is featured in the current edition of the Kern Business Journal.

San Joaquin Community Hospital recently completed a major expansion of its existing pneumatic tube network. Manufactured by Switzerland-based Swisslog, the expanded system will connect the hospital’s new laboratory department and its new AIS Cancer Center.

Expansion of the hospital’s pneumatic tube network was a $1.7 million investment that required extensive trenching through the hospital’s main parking lot and under a major street in downtown Bakersfield.
