If you think Zen Center programs are simply quiet, meditative, and solemn occasions requiring passive involvement, then get ready for wonderful learning experiences, and in fact many of them.
The San Francisco Zen Center, also known as City Center, is an amazing educational venue offering more learning opportunities than most people realize. Additionally, this beautiful Julia Morgan designed building is one of the largest Buddhist sanghas (Buddhist community of monks and nuns) outside Asia. As a traditional training center in the Soto Zen tradition, City Center offers daily meditation and service for those new to Zen and for more experienced followers. The Zen Center has three practice places: San Francisco City Center; Green Gulch Farm in Marin County; and Tassajara Zen Mountain Center -- the first Zen training center in the West -- in the Ventana Wilderness near Big Sur.
The Zen Center’s excellent website is complete with all the information you need on the San Francisco Zen Center, linked centers Green Gulch Center and Tassajara, and featured offerings including upcoming talks, classes, tea events, workshops and retreats, plus much more.
Note: “San Francisco Zen Center welcomes diversity. People of every race, nationality, class, gender, sexual orientation, age, and physical ability — all are welcome. May all beings realize their true nature.”*
