Today San Francisco Opera (SFO) announced a cast change for the opening production of its 92nd season, which will also be the opening night performance next week. This is Vincenzo Bellini’s Norma in a new production staged by Kevin Newbury and shared with the Canadian Opera Company, the Gran Theatre del Liceu, and the Lyric Opera of Chicago. Daveda Karanas, who was scheduled to sing the role of Adalgisa, has withdrawn from the production for personal reasons.
Replacing Karanas, the American mezzo Jamie Barton will make her SFO debut at the opening night performance at 8 p.m. on September 5. She will sing an additional four of the remaining performances on September 10 (7:30 p.m.), September 14 (2 p.m.), September 27 (7:30 p.m.), and September 30 (7:30 p.m.). Casting for Adalgisa for the 7:30 performances on September 19 and September 23 will be announced at a later date. Casting of the remaining leading roles will be unchanged: Sondra Radvanovsky in the title role of the high-priestess of the Druids, Marco Berti as Pollione, the Roman soldier who secretly fathered her children, and Christian Van Horn as Oroveso, Norma’s father and Chief of the Druids. Nicola Luisotti will conduct, and Ian Robertson will lead the SFO Chorus.
