Today, marching through the streets of San Francisco, was a most marvelous sight. From a couple of blocks away, from the noise alone, it seemed almost like a protest or an incipient riot intended to grab attention. Almost, but there was a cordial bubbly feel about it.
On closer look, the booming participants were all cheerful, young and uniformly dressed in black outfits featuring snappy black tee-shirts with a green logo that said “San Francisco Institute of Esthetics and Cosmetology. What in the world? Seems it is the 2013 Free Hug Day, and the dispensers of those free hugs are the beyond-adorable future cosmetology professionals.
Love letters? Yes. The banners they held were just that, love letters handwritten, colorful, and promises of affection. As they walked through the streets holding those signs announcing free hug day, they stopped people to offer an actual hug. They were generous in offering sociable embraces to passers-by and gracious about delivering them.
So was it a protest? Possibly. Maybe a cheerful protest against the sadly increasing distance between people, an objection to the paucity of simple communication and face to face human contact. A hug, after all, is something that cannot be done by a cellphone.
A riot? Yes, a riot of enthusiastic warmth running gleefully through the streets of San Francisco, particularly lovely in this day and age of seeing people walk through the streets looking down and focused on devices instead of up and into each other’s faces.
Love letters come in all shapes and forms, and although as a rule a love letter is a gift designed for one person on this planet, there are those love letters meant for a group. Congratulations to The San Francisco Institute of Esthetics and Cosmetology for a most heartening example of a love letter delivered as a gift meant for anyone who wants the joy of a hug.
How fitting. A hug is one more way of making people feel appealing, and is feeling attractive not what esthetics and cosmetology is all about?
