San Francisco Giants Opening Day: Trendy waterfront fun

The World Series winning San Francisco Giants  are ready for April 9's Opening Day in their home town - so, let's Play Ball!   Celebrate America's #1 team and romance with your true love at the vibrant, downtown waterfront AT&T baseball park next to the world’s biggest Cupid’s bow and arrow.

You can’t go wrong with a visit to the Embarcadero area, where the world-famous 60 foot high sculpture ‘Cupid’s Span’ towers over San Francisco's famous Pop Art baseball park set in the trendy SoMa neighborhood. See Tim Lincecum and Brian Wilson have all the fun inside, where you can still buy a hot dog with all the fixings.  Afterwards, take a waterfront walk...

Anchored at one end by the classically elegant Ferry Building with its array of gourmet delicacies and its renowned farmer’s market, and at the other by the Pop Art themed AT&T baseball park and a statue of Willie Mays, lies a scenic waterfront park that invites you to stroll with your sweetie.   A variety of restaurants are also  nearby, from the renowned Hog Island oyster bar and the swanky, romantic Boulevard to the quirky Italian nostalgia of Bucca di Beppo.

When world-famous Dutch sculptor Claes Oldenberg  created this stunning waterfront sculpture “Cupid’s Span” he must have found it ironic to have it joined by a baseball park that looks like something he dreamed up as well.  Oldenberg’s giant baseball bat sculpture in Chicago was synonymous with Pop Art culture in the 1970’s.  Somehow,  it is fitting that it's  reflected in our own AT&T baseball park, with its iconic giant objects:  a catcher’s mitt and a vintage Coca Cola bottle.

Fans of blues singer Otis Redding may recall his eponymous hit “Sittin’ on the dock of the bay” when they come to a baseball game here -- but when you add another of his melodies to the mix, it matches this bayfront park to a T – “Don’t you mess with Cupid” seems to have been written with this spot in mind.
