San Francisco Giants pitcher Barry Zito showed up for spring training in Scottsdale, Ariz., Wednesday, Feb. 17, 2010 in a sharp, black Range Rover with matching black wheels. The first workout for Giants pitchers and catchers is on Thursday.
A high school star pitcher in San Diego, Zito was not drafted once, nor twice, but three times before joining Major League Baseball in 2000, instead choosing to sharpen his skills at both University of California - Santa Barbara and USC. He has dominated as a pitcher for the Oakland A's, and now the San Francisco Giants. The 32-year-old surfs, is a published photographer, and plays the guitar, in addition to singing and acting. However one of his most admirable traits is his dedication to serve wounded military personnel through his "Strikeouts for Troops" program, which provides comforts of home to rehabilitating soldiers and Marines. The program has raised nearly a million dollars since its 2005 launch.
About the Range Rover
Despite the redundant ‘Rover’ name, the Range Rover continues as an SUV icon since its British launch nearly 40 years ago and two decades on the American market. It’s the vehicle of choice for the likes of the Pope and Queen of England, as well as mere mortals around the globe. Pricing runs from around $80k for the HSE up to $95k for the Supercharged version.
From Edmunds.com: The Range Rover is a five-passenger luxury SUV available in two trim levels. The HSE features a 305-horsepower 4.4-liter V8, while the Supercharged has a 4.2-liter V8 that is (surprise!) supercharged to produce 400 hp. A six-speed automatic transmission with manual shift control is standard with both engines. A permanent four-wheel-drive system is standard on all Range Rovers, along with low-range gearing and nearly 11 inches of maximum ground clearance. The standard Terrain Response system allows the driver to customize powertrain, suspension and electronic stability and traction systems to best handle five predetermined off-road conditions.
Engineered in the late 1990s during the brief period when BMW owned Land Rover, the Range Rover is nevertheless aging quite well. It employs unibody construction (instead of body-on-frame architecture) and a fully independent suspension (instead of solid axles). These changes make all the difference when cruising on pavement, as the Range Rover now delivers the composed ride and secure handling expected of a true luxury SUV. Yet BMW engineers went about their work carefully so as not to compromise all-terrain ability.READ MORE AT EDMUNDS>COM >>
