San Francisco geography in music

The Bernal Hill Players is an adventurous and eclectic professional chamber music ensemble conceived in 2008 by San Francisco Community Music Center faculty members Jennifer Peringer on piano and percussion, Martha Rodríguez-Salazar on flute and voice, and Leah diTullio on clarinet. Their mission is to be accessible, innovative, friendly, and educational.  They have a special interest in promoting local composers and always look for repertoire with strong local flavor.

Their latest project is a concert entitled San Francisco:  In and About the City.  The entire program consists of recently created chamber music about neighborhoods of San Francisco, all by local composers.  Two of the works will be world premieres, “Sutro Tower in the Fog” by Peter Josheff and “Episodes in China Basin” by Katrina Wreede.  The oldest work on the program dates all the way back to 2006.  It is the “Daikon Radish” movement from Beth Custer’s The Bernal Heights Suite, originally composed for string quartet and voice and arranged by Peringer.  Peringer has also arranged The Bernal Hill Suite, composed in 2009 by Loren Jones.  In addition the program will include two works commissioned by the Bernal Hill Players last year, Suite de los Barrios by Chus Alonso and “With the Birds Above Fort Funston” by Erik Pearson.
