San Francisco declares May 27 as Burma Democracy Day

Join the Burma Democracy Day Rally in the San Francisco Bay Area on Thursday, May 27 to honor the 20th Anniversary of 1990 Election in Burma.

In April 2010, the military regime in Burma released an election law that excludes Aung San Suu Kyi and those that are against the military regime from participating in elections. In response, the City of San Francisco, with unanimous consent, declared May 27 as Burma Democracy Day, recognizing Aung San Suu Kyi as the rightful leader and calling on U.S. to denounce the Burma military's 2010 sham elections.

The goals of the rally are to recognize the National League for Democracy Party (NLD) led by Aung San Suu Kyi that won the 1990 election; to protest against the illegitimate 2010 election; and to commemorate the “Burma Democracy Day (May 27)."

The city Clark will send the resolution to United Nations General Secretary Ban Ki-moon, President Obama, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and U.S. Ambassador to the UN Susan Rice thanking them for their support and urging Burma’s neighbor China, India and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to stand with the U.S.

When: Thursday May 27, 2010 from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm
Where: Federal Building. (Front)
450 Golden Gate Ave (at Larkin), San Francisco
