S.F. Chronicle Columnist C.W. Nevius wrote a follow up article in today's Chronicle titled : Police response to cyclist's death and quite frankly everyone appears to be at fault for this riders tragic death. I'm glad the family obtained an attorney to represent them in this matter. Drivers in this City don't respond to Bike riders very well, example when a motor vehicle is sharing a lane with a rider the rider's responsibility is to ride as far to the right as possible. So the Police response, pull a squad car in a lane next to the curb and make riders ride around on the left side, brilliant.
When the motor vehicle is making a right turn they are required to slow down, pull behind the rider as they are passing the vehicle and then conclude the turning process, So why wouldn't the Police release the accident report when the vehicle code requires them to do so? Here in the South of Market part of San Francisco, drivers drive too fast, attempt to get to the intersection before the bike riders and the pedestrians. Pedestrians are entitled as well they will enter the cross walk with 2-3 seconds left in the crossing timer.
We have to share the road, most drivers do and are "good at it" they look for pedestrians and vice versa, I look for bike riders all the time and make an effort to judge what they are doing, even though a rare handful actually use hand turn signals just like turn signals on the car which most drivers don't use....And where are the Police during these times of the day, not around the south of market area. check out the link, figure it out how we're all to blame.
