San Francisco Conservatory of Music to present its annual Scholarship Concert

Every year the San Francisco Conservatory of Music (SFCM) presents a musical evening featuring student scholarship recipients from both the Collegiate and Preparatory Divisions. This year’s concert will take place at the beginning of next month and will feature selections covering the history of music from the eighteenth century to the twentieth. The program will be organized in five sections, each featuring a different group of performers:

1. Those who missed the delightful debut concert of One Great City last November (presented by the Delphi Trio Emerging Artists Program) will be able to compensate for their loss. This is a duo of guitars with “extras,” since Alexandra Iranfar doubles as a soprano and Timothy Sherren provides the arrangements for much of their repertoire. They will begin the Scholarship Concert with a reprise of the Cole Porter songs performed at the end of their debut, “You’re the Top,” “You Do Something to Me,” and “Anything Goes.”
2. Pianist John Baeg will perform selected movements from Johann Sebastian Bach’s BWV 807 in A minor, his second “English” suite, followed by the popular “Rondo alla Turca,” the final movement of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s K. 331 sonata.
3. The first movement of Paul Taffanel’s G minor wind quintet will be performed by a student group that calls themselves Quintet 104, consisting of Gina Gulyas on flute, Marcus Phillips on oboe, William Wysocki on clarinet, Alexis Luque on bassoon, and Stephanie Richard on horn,
4. The Quarter Tones is a quartet of four cello students: Laura Gaynon, Erin Kelly, Natalie Raney, and Patricia Ryan. They will perform the most recent works on the program, arrangements from the pop repertoire: Pink Floyd’s “With You Were Here” and Michael Jackson’s “Smooth Criminal.” (Presumably they will be performing their own arrangements.)
5. The program will conclude with a group performance by the Conservatory Baroque Ensemble. The selection will be the duet “Bramo aver mille vite” from George Frideric Handel’s HWV 33 opera Ariodante. The vocal soloists will be mezzo Johanna Bronk as Ariodante and soprano Audrey Goodman as Ginevra.

The 2013 Scholarship Concert will take place at 8 p.m. on Saturday, February 9, in the SFCM Concert Hall (50 Oak Street). Tickets are free, but reservations are required. Tickets may be reserved by calling the Box Office at 415-503-6275 or by going to the Box Office in the SFCM lobby. (Box Office hours are 10 a.m.–4 p.m., Monday through Friday.)
