San Diego Welcomes Sustainable Seafood Week (Photos)

Somewhere between the devil and the deep blue sea, a subdued cry rose to the surface of the waters, bringing a much-needed awareness to protect our fragile ecosystems.

Enter the San Diego Ocean Foundation (SDOF), a non-profit organization established to promote ocean stewardship with local community-based projects. Together with a bevy of local San Diego restaurants, businesses, and local fishing communities, they are committed to promoting seafood sustainability throughout the region, and are primed to bring us a week of conscientious dining.

Sustainable Seafood Week is set to kickoff with a seaworthy fundraiser this Thursday, March 7th. Hosted at SeaWorld San Diego, the 28th Annual Sustainable Seafood Gala promises an evening of splish-splashy festivities, and a taste of ethical enchantment under the sea.

Join over 500 guests to satiate your appetite and curiosities with a multisensory experience to include deep sea, eco-friendly dishes, hosted beers by Ballast Point Brewing, wines provided by Vesper Vineyards, and spirited cocktails from Snake Oil Cocktail Company. The evening will include silent auction packages, raffle prizes, photobooth opportunities, dolphin and ray interactions, and an all you can ride excuse to enjoy the new Manta roller coaster.

Take advantage of this opportunity to float about the celebrity chef stations to discuss your concerns about our fish populations and sustainable fish sourcing, while learning about the health benefits of eating seafood while avoiding fishery depletion.

Tickets are priced at $150 each, to include unlimited samples, and can be purchased here:

You can feel good about your ticket purchase as proceeds will benefit San Diego’s Ocean Foundation to fund local marine science youth programs.

The following week, gather a net full of your finest mates for some added conscious living, and pay a visit to Sustainable Seafood Week set for March 10-15th . Make certain to support your local haunts offering ethical seafood dining options. With 75 participating restaurants and foodie hotspots, you’re guaranteed to enjoy kind salt water fare without the guilt.

Make your dining reservations now with OpenTable and UrbanSpoon to do your part to change the way fish are caught and farmed across the globe. Your participation will help to continue the mission of ocean sustainability, and you’ll leave satisfied, knowing well that you’re leaving behind a smaller carbon footprint for our coastal oceans.
