The San Diego Website ReadySanDiego.org urges residents to think about Earthquake Preparedness. The devastating 9.0 quake that hit Japan sparked alot of conversations about natural disasters. Amid all the confusion over seismic activity signs and predictions, one message came through loud and clear. "Earthquakes are still unpredictable" they strike without warning and can level a city in minutes. Although researchers continue to investigate faults in hopes of discovering patterns that will aide in the effort to determine when a quake will occur, most experts agree that disaster preparedness is the key to survival.
According to ReadySanDiego.org every year about 500 earthquakes occur in San Diego that can be felt. Which is a sparse amount when compared to other California areas. However, seismic activity has been increasing since 1984. The site also notes that some faults can remain hidden beneath unperturbed sediments. They are known as "Blind Faults" and are usually discovered after an earthquake hits.
The Website lists these 7 steps to earthquake preparedness:
Repair potential hazards
Have a disaster plan
Prepare a disaster supply kit
Fix potential weaknesses in buildings
During an earthquake, drop, cover and hold on
After an earthquake, check for injuries and damage
When it is determined to be safe, continue with disaster plan
Taking small steps to prepare for natural disasters can be the deciding factor between life and death. For more information on Earthquake Preparedness go to ReadySanDiego.org.
