The Mountain West continues to grow.
Less than a month after Boise State ditched the Big East to stay with the MW, San Diego State has done the same.
The Mountain West Conference announced Wednesday in a press release that SDSU will remain with the conference in all sports.
"As a charter member of the Mountain West, San Diego State has decades of history and tremendous competitive rivalries with our member institutions," said Commissioner Craig Thompson on the conference's website. "With today's announcement, SDSU's membership continues uninterrupted and helps the Mountain West maintain a solid foundation going forward. The Aztecs remain a perfect fit geographically and provide the Conference with a highly-competitive athletics program that includes a Top 25 men's basketball team, a 2012 MW tri-champion in football and several other league championship programs."
Thompson makes great points. His Mountain West now has an even stronger presence of three schools in the recruiting hotbed and highly populated California, San Diego State has one of the best basketball programs in the nation and their football program continues to improve overall.
Hawaii and Fresno State each just finished up their inaugural seasons with the MW, and with San Jose State and Utah State joining up next year, the conference will be at 12 members in football and 11 in all sports (Hawaii is a football-only member).
In all, this is great news for the near future of the Mountain West Conference as they will almost certainly emerge as a top-five conference in the aftermath of all this recent realignment.
