“I could hear the birds” – said North Park resident, Grace Reilly, of her experience biking in the August 11, 2013 CicloSDias event starting from Cherokee Point Elementary School to 30th & K Streets. A drive thru the neighborhood does not always offer up the music of the birds like what Reilly got to experience.
Reilly, accompanied by a friend, South Park resident Alexis Steele, participated in the first ever CicloSDias event in San Diego which gave city residents the opportunity to mount their Schwinn’s, beach cruisers, or any other version of a bike and cruise a preordained route that also was blessed with mainly closed streets. A few spots on the route were used for cars to quickly pass thru.
The August event featured 5.2 miles of car free, open streets and was modeled after an event that started over 30 years ago in Bogota, Columbia. The biking event ran from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. on a sunny Sunday.
“I saw Penny-farthings, roller skaters, baby strollers, even a preteen on a stunt bike.” said Reilly of what “wheels” other participants used. Runners and walkers also participated with, perhaps, only the wheels in their heads spinning. Pets were welcome and included in the rolling crowds.
Around the Cherokee Point Elementary School a specialty bike for a family of four was sighted, a half-luge/half bike zoomed into the area, but no children’s Big Wheels were to be seen.
Thousands participated in this San Diego first with the San Diego Police Department pairing up with volunteers from local unions to man the long saw-horse closed streets.
All ages participated with young children on bikes with training wheels to grey haired men and women pedaling along the chic North and South Park neighborhood streets.
Bicycle advocacy groups were on hand to support the riders. Local politicians lent their blessings at the kick-off event at the school.

Speed racers indeed, but this was the best of all worlds, no speeding tickets were issued. Go Speed Racer Go.
