San Diego Comic-Con 2014: Speed vs. Cunning box

Official Magic Twitter

It has begun! The San Diego Comic-Con 2014 Magic panel is now underway, and we have finally gotten our first piece of truly new information - it concerns Duel Decks: Speed vs. Cunning, and by extension Khans of Tarkir.

Specifically, we're looking at the front of the Duel Decks box, and the clear front panel shows us a pair of legendary creatures, meant to be the faces of the deck. This is, of course, pretty usual for faction vs. faction duel decks - and, of course, one of the legends in question is a preview of the coming block.

Cunning has a new-art reprint - the classic "pit gladiator" legend of Onslaught, Arcanis the Omnipotent. He's a welcome choice, as a well-known combo piece and EDH commander.

And then there's Speed - who's packing a very scary new guy:

Zurgo Helmsmasher 2RWB

Legendary Creature - Orc Warrior (Mythic)

Zurgo Helmsmasher attacks each combat if able.

Zurgo Helmsmasher has indestructible as long as it's your turn.

Whenever a creature dealt damage by Zurgo Helmsmasher this turn dies, put a +1/+1 counter on Zurgo Helmsmasher.

Lot of things to note here: Orcs confirmed! Wedge legends (if not wedge block) confirmed! Reordered wedge color mana symbols (which advances the wedge block theory)! And the fact that this is one of the scariest legends EVER printed! He'll make for one heck of a commander - he's basically impossible to deal with on the block, he's a three-hit kill on his own no matter the format; and he demands answers, FAST. I am thrilled for the rest of Tarkir just from this terrifyingly awesome dude.
