The Great American Beer Festival may seem like fun and games to most attendees, but it’s serious business for the brewers. While thousands of craft beer fans sampled beers from every corner of the United States, an army of judges decided on awards for 84 different styles of beer. Brewers gathered in the Colorado Convention Center’s Mile High Ballroom –ironically on the ground floor of the convention center— for Saturday morning’s awards ceremony, and San Diego breweries took home 13 different medals.
Here’s the hardware that’s on the way back to San Diego:
Pizza Port (Ocean Beach) was San Diego’s big winner at the Great American Beer Festival with three medals. They took home a gold medal in the Session Beer category for Beer Hunter, a silver medal in the Imperial Red Ale category for Rhino Chaser, and a bronze medal in the American-Style Strong Pale Ale category for Kung Fu Elvis.
Alesmith took the gold medal in the Barley Wine-Style ale category for Old Numbskull, and a silver medal in the Belgian-Style Abbey category for Decadence 2012 Quad.
Rock Bottom (La Jolla) took the bronze medal in the Irish-Style Red Ale category for Ragtop Red, and a bronze medal in the English-Style Brown category for Longboard Brown. The nationwide Rock Bottom chain also won Group Brewpub of the Year.
Monkey Paw won the gold medal in the American-Style Strong Pale Ale category for Bonobos.
Lost Abbey took home a bronze medal in the American-Style Sour Ale category for Red Poppy.
Karl Strauss took the gold medal in the Irish-Style Red Ale category for Red Trolley.
Coronado Brewing Company took the silver medal in the American-Style Black Ale category for Black Sails.
Oceanside Ale Works took the bronze medal in the American-Style Black Ale category for Oxymoron.
