San Diego breakfast cocktails: Bloody Marys at their best

See also

San Diego takes its brunch pretty seriously, the art of the Bloody Mary even more so. Some people like their Bloody Mary’s peppery, others with enough garnishes to count as a small meal. Personally, the perfect Bloody Mary for me is the right parts mix, vodka and spice. The only garnish I require is a cocktail stick of thick, green olives and a crispy piece of bacon.

Bloody Marys are supposed to be the best hangover cure. Whether that’s the case or not, January 1st is considered National Bloody Mary Day -- the day some can be considered the biggest hangover day as people usher in the new year. There is no shortage of places to get a good Bloody Mary. But here are a few places to add to your list:

The Commons’ Bloody Mary puts a spin on the classic Bloody Mary. The Commons (901 4th Ave.) makes theirs with Guinness and horseradish and serves them in mason jars complete with olives, limes and shrimp.

The Herri Mary at Brian Malarkey’s Herringbone in La Jolla (7837 Herschel Ave.) kicks the spice up with a jalapeno-infused vodka and Ballast Point mix while those wanting the Bloody Maria can get their fix with tequila instead.

The Locally Renowned Bloody Mary from Redfield’s Deli at Manchester Grand Hyatt (1 Market Place) has a recipe that includes ingredients like horseradish to liven things up. Pepperoncinis, olives, celery, and a Slim Jim are used for garnishes with celery salt rim. The drink is served with a beer chaser.

If you’re headed to or coming from the beach on New Year’s Day, you can enjoy the Tower23 Bloody Mary at JRDN at Tower23 Hotel (723 Felspar St.) that includes a house-infused jalapeno-cilantro vodka and a bacon salt rim.

Meyer Mary at Grant Grill (326 Broadway) includes Garden Meyer Lemon Juice in their mix for a bit of fruity tang. And W San Diego (421 W. B St.) adds in 4-5 blackberries as part of their unique twist for their Blackberry Mary. Don’t expect something too sweet with this drink though as it is made with Stoli Hot Vodka and includes a pickled bacon slice and jalapenos.

For the bacon lovers, check out Beaumont’s Eatery in Bird Rock (5662 La Jolla Blvd.) for their Bacon LOVE and Tomato Mary that uses a secret recipe that involves applewood smoked bacon and olives. Wanting more snacks with your drink? Try Carlsbad’s Chandler’s Restaurant (1 Ponto Rd.) Bloody Mary options. You can order yours with bacon, lettuce and tomato; potato chips and a Slim Jim; or one with prawns, cocktail onions and beer.

And, of course, for those who wish to build their own Bloody Mary, just visit AVANT at Rancho Bernardo Inn (17550 Bernardo Oaks Dr.) where you can even choose how you want your rim spiced. They have plenty of extras including caper berries, bacon, carrots, and beef jerky to name just a few.

Tantalize those taste buds and cure your inevitable hangover with these Bloody Mary options. Let me know where you think I can get the best Bloody Mary. Bottoms up!
