In their second match of the Mylan World TeamTennis season, the San Diego Aviators battled it out at the Valley View Casino Center (formerly the San Diego Sports Arena) to defeat the Philadelphia Freedoms, 20-19, after a Supertiebreaker
The night was an exciting event for San Diego tennis fans with men’s doubles leading into Overtime and the final results of the match being determined by a 13-point Supertiebreaker.
The Philadelphia Freedoms were led by Liezel Huber, former WTA doubles No. 1; Taylor Townsend, Australian Open girls' singles champion; Frank Dancevic, ATP singles No. 95; and Marcelo Melo, ATP doubles No. 7.
San Diego Aviators coach Dave Macpherson decided the evening’s line-up and started the night with Aviators’ Somdev Devvarman facing Philadelphia’s Frank Dancevic in men’s singles. Somdev was able to defeat Dancevic in the set, 5-2.
Next, the Aviators’ Daniela Hantuchova took on Philadelphia’s Townsend in women’s singles, but couldn’t find her stride losing the set 5-2.
In mixed doubles, Melo and Huber of Philadelphia took on San Diego’s Raven Klaasen and Kveta Peschke. This match led to a Tiebreaker after Philadelphia matched San Diego, 4-4. In the 9-point Tiebreaker, Melo’s hard-bounce shots were too much for Klaasen and Peschke resulting in a Phildelphia victory of 5-4 for the set.
Aviators Peschke and Hantuchova won in women’s doubles against Huber and Townsend, 5-1, to put the Aviators in the lead 16-13 heading into the final set.
The night concluded with Klaasen and Devvarman of the Aviators taking on Philadelphia’s Melo and Dancevic in men’s doubles. Philadelphia won at 5-3 to force the overtime and made up the one-game deficit by winning the following game and forcing the match-deciding Supertiebreaker. In a Supertiebreaker, the first team to seven points wins the set and the match. Klaasen and Devvarman earned a 7-1 victory with the home-crowd cheering on their feet, for a final score of 20-19.
San Diego tennis fans at tonight’s match also had a special viewing of Billie Jean King receiving a proclamation from the city of San Diego declaring this week of July, Tennis Week. She also received a ‘San-Diego’ style gift for her dedication to tennis and gender-equality in sports. The gift was a surfboard featuring a photo of her holding the Wimbledon trophy after her iconic 1975 victory.
The Aviators hit the road tomorrow, July 9 and travel to Austin to rematch the Austin Aces. The Aviators will then return to San Diego Thursday, July 10, 7 p.m. to face Texas Wild; and Saturday, July 12, 7 p.m. against the Boston Lobsters. Then, the next six matches the Aviators will be on the road facing the Washington Kastles, Philadelphia Freedoms, Boston Lobsters, Springfield Lasers and Austin Aces before returning to San Diego Sunday, July 20, 22 and 23 with the Bryan Brothers joining the team line-up.
