San Antonio women urged to know more about cervical cancer prevention

January has been designated as Cervical Health Awareness Month by the U.S. Congress to focus on women’s, HPV disease, and the importance of early detection.

San Antonio is home to the only National Cancer Institute designated cancer center in South Texas.

The Cancer Therapy and Research Center (CTRC) at the UT Health Science Center at San Antonio is one of 66 such centers in the U.S.

The new year begins with promoting advancements and the continuing research for prevention, detection and treatment of cervical cancer and HPV.

There is a huge 33% death rate with cervical cancer.

About 12,000 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer each year in the United States, with nearly 4,000 dying from their disease.

Cervical cancer is preventable according to the National Cervical Cancer Coalition.

Cervical cancers are caused by specific types of Human Papillomavirus (HPV), a common virus that many women experience if they are sexually active.

Research has also lead to screening tests and a vaccination for this cancer.

Prevention guidelines include:

  • Vaccinations, available for female and males, age 9 to 26.
  • PAP tests for women, beginning by age 21.
  • HPV blood tests, given when recommended.
