San Antonio summer food drive underway

Five Star Cleaners launched this past week its "Five for 5," to increase food donations over the summer - typically a time when the San Antonio Food Bank sees more need.

The Five Star Cleaners owners -- Sharlene Thum, Richard Thum and Bryan Newbold - are asking area residents to support their community outreach campaign which runs from June 22 through August 15.

The focus of the Five for 5 initiative is to increase awareness about the need for food donations during the summer months, and to collect food stuffs for the San Antonio Food Bank.

Sharlene Thum says, “We have learned that not all youngsters are excited when school is out. During the school year, they receive the majority of their meals at school, and during the summer months meals are not a guarantee.”

Today, for every 100 needy children in Texas, only nine receive summer meals, according to the San Antonio Food Bank.

“We are asking our gracious and generous residents to drop five cans at any of our 18 convenient Five Star locations. And a jar of peanut butter (in a plastic container) is an excellent item to be among the five because not only do kids love it, but also it has tremendous nutritional value,” Thum adds.

San Antonio Food Bank President and CEO Eric S. Cooper, says, “Proper nutrition is vital to the growth and development of children. Because families can’t meet the need to feed their children, food banks report increases in requests for emergency food assistance in the summer.”

As a gift for donating five cans, each person receives a receipt for tax purposes and a $5 gift certificate good toward any future dry cleaning order courtesy of Five Star Cleaners.
