On Wednesday, October 30, 2013 the second of the 2013-2014 NBA season saw a full night of action and many big stories. From major comebacks to near quadruple doubles from rookies in their first NBA game. Out west there was a rematch of the Western Conference Finals as the Memphis Grizzlies visited the San Antonio Spurs. The result was the same as their playoff series this past summer as the Spurs were victorious 101 – 94.
The Grizzlies were making to look a point that the series that ended their past season would not be the focus coming into this year when paired against San Antonio. It looked that way in the first quarter in which Memphis held strong against the Spurs. However, that situation would change in the second quarter where the Spurs would outscore the Grizzlies 30 to 7 to go into halftime with the lead 48-27.
Memphis would come out to play inspired basketball to score more than 30 points during the last two quarters of the game. Perhaps the most important note of the second half was an injury to Tim Duncan that forced him off the court. He took an elbow to the chest early after halftime that caused him to leave to the bench then go all the way back to the locker room.
The Spurs had six players in double figures. Kawhi Leonard led the starters with 14 points and 7 rebounds. Boris Diaw came off the bench to match his 14 and had 4 rebounds of his own. Patty Mills, Manu Ginobili, Thiago Splitter and Tony Parker added to the complete team effort. Duncan ended the night with only 3 points and 6 rebounds.
Memphis also had a very balanced attack as they had five players who broke the ten barrier in their first game of the season. Tony Allen led the starters with 15 points, while Mike Conley and Marc Gasol added 14 points each. Gasol also had 9 rebounds. Mike Miller added 11 points in his return to Memphis. Zach Randolph had only 2 points but was able to grab seven rebounds.
The second night of the new NBA season continued the narrative that the San Antonio Spurs hold an edge over the Memphis Grizzlies. The Spurs took the first meeting in what should be an interesting matchup in the West all season.
