Samsung appears to be racing to beat Apple to the market with a new smart watch. The New York Times reported on August 18, 2013, Samsung Said to Be Preparing to Unveil Smart Watch. In September Samsung Electronics plans to introduce a wristwatch that can make phone calls, play video games and send e-mails.
This watch, rumored to be called Samsung Galaxy Gear, is anticipated to be shown off around the time of an electronics industry trade fair in Berlin which begins Sept. 6, according to a source. A media event has been scheduled by Samsung for Sept. 4 at which time it is also expected to introduce the Note III, which is a new version of its “phablet,” or a cross between a phone and a tablet.
“The commercial launch will definitely be this year,” said the person with knowledge of the unveiling, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the person was not authorized to speak publicly about the company’s plans. There has been some competition in the smart watch market. Sony has recently introduced a second-generation version of its smart watch, which is a gadget that works in conjunction with a smartphone in the user’s pocket. Apple is also said to be working on its own new wrist-worn device.
Bloomberg has also reported Samsung is said to be introducing a smart watch next month. Aside from being able to make phone calls, check e-mails and play video games on the Galaxy Gear, you will also be able to surf the Web on this device. Google Inc. (GOOG)’s Android operating system will power this exciting device.
