Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and iPad 2 - current and future pricing

Third in a series - click for part 2.

Both Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and iPad 2 are widely available in the Cleveland area at these prices: Tab10.1 and iPad 2 both have list price of $499.99 with 16 GB memory and WiFi only, and higher prices with 4G (Tab) or 3G (iPad) capability and extra storage.

Right now, Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 is available at Amazon.com for $444.80 and Bestbuy.com for $449.99.  We expect the Android tablets prices to fall in 2012 faster and more significantly than iPad prices decrease.

iPad's price is still $499.99 at online outlets and retail stores.  We're predicting iPad will maintain its $499.99 price until Apple releases the next iPad, currently expected around March, 2012 (note that used /refurbished iPads are available from Apple for less).

Conclusion:  Apple defined a whole new market with iPad and Samsung is arguably its first serious competitor with Galaxy Tab 10.1.  Given the similar price points, we chose to buy iPad 2 with its smoother display and ability to deliver smooth app/photo/music synchronization across platforms; however, Tab can win market share in the future.  It is clear that Tab offers serious advantages, namely: 4G speed, better screen resolution, GPS capability, and a shell that is easier to hold.

Where to buy:  The iPad is available in the two Cleveland area Apple stores at Legacy Village in Lyndhurst and at Crocker Park in Westlake, the Apple store at Summit Mall in Akron, and Columbus area  Apple stores at Easton and Polaris.  The iPad is also at Walmart, Best Buy, Target, Verizon stores and AT&T stores everywhere.  Samsung Galaxy Tab is available at Best Buy, Target, Office Max, Verizon stores, AT&T stores, and Sprint stores throughout Cleveland and north east Ohio including OfficeMax stores in Cleveland Heights, Garfield Heights, Mayfield Heights, Middleburg Heights, Warrensville Heights, Solon, Willoughby Hills, Parma, Rocky River, Strongsville, Westlake and North Olmsted.
