Samsung is set to release a few new mobile devices in April, all sporting features that focus on fitness and health. The Samsung Galaxy S5, Gear 2, Gear 2 Neo and Gear Fit are the first of their kind to feature built-in heart rate monitors.
Samsung announced the Galaxy S5 smart phone along with three Gear series smart wearable devices on Monday (Feb. 24) at its Unpacked 5 event in Barcelona. Hitting the retail market on April 11 are the Galaxy S5 smartphone the Galaxy Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo smart watches and the Gear Fit fitness band. The unveiling finally puts an end to the numerous rumors and leaks in anticipation of the Korean giant’s new Galaxy series devices.
Each new Galaxy smart wearable can interact with a range of Samsung Galaxy devices not only as a companion device, but also as a personal fitness coach. With built-in heart rate monitors, the Gear 2 watches or Gear Fit fitness band is capable of letting you know to either pick up your pace or slow down while you’re working out.
The Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo are compatible with 17 Galaxy devices, while the Gear Fit is compatible with 20 devices. Users can receive instant notifications of calls, emails, text messages, S-planner, and app updates right on their wrist without having to look at their phone.
Both the Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo watches feature a 1.63-inch Super AMOLED display, a 1.0 GHz dual-core processor, 512MB RAM, a changeable strap, Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity and are dust and water resistant. There’s also 4GB of storage space available on each so you can upload your music playlist into the smart watch to listen to your favorite tunes while you exercise. The two watches share nearly identical specs, except that the Gear 2 sports a 2.0-megapixel auto focus camera, while the Gear 2 Neo is camera-less. Fitness display feature options include Heart Rate Sensor, Pedometer and Exercise. An additional Sleep & Stress display can be downloaded. Color availability of the Gear 2 includes Charcoal Black, Gold Brown and Wild Orange. The Gear 2 Neo is available in Charcoal Black, Mocha Grey and Wild Orange.
The Gear Fit band features a 1.84-inch curved Super AMOLED display, a changeable strap in either Black, Orange or Mocha Grey, Bluetooth 4.0 and is also dust and water resistant. Display options include Pedometer, Exercise, Heart Rate, Sleep, Stopwatch and Timer.

To help users develop and stay on top of their fitness goals, the new S Health 3.0 fitness app comes pre-installed on the Galaxy S5. The enhanced S-Health app includes a pedometer as well as diet and exercise record keeping features so you can monitor and organize your health and fitness progress.
The Galaxy S5’s main specs include a 5.1 FHD Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 1920 x 1080, a 2.5 GHz quad core processor, 2GB RAM, a 16-megapixel back camera and a 2.0-megapixel front camera. Connectivity support includes Bluetooth 4.0, NFC, IR Remote and Wi-Fi. Android 4.4.2 KitKat is the stock OS of the S5, powered by a 2800 mAh battery promising up to 390 hours of standby time and 21 hours of talk time.
Beginning April 11, the Samsung Galaxy S5 phone, Gear 2 watches and Gear Fit fitness band will be available worldwide in over 150 countries. Pricing details for the upcoming devices should be revealed as we get closer to the official release date.
