Hot on the heels of the leaked images of the new Samsung Galaxy Note 4, new reports are suggesting that Samsung could in fact name two variants of their popular Note smartphone at the Samsung Unpacked event that is due to be held on Sept.3. SamMobile on Aug. 11 reported that Samsung have applied for a trademark for a device named the Galaxy Note Edge.
On Aug. 11 new images of the proposed Galaxy Note 4 emerged on the web, and while the phone certainly looks nice, it did not offer the exciting new form factor that was teased by a high ranking Samsung exec earlier on this year, however the Samsung Galaxy Note Edge could sport that new form factor that could feature a three-sided display, or more likely a curved screen much like the LG G-Flex.
While information about either device is still scarce, it will be interesting to see if reports of a three-sided device are accurate. There have been rumblings about such a device for a few months now, and some nice rendered images and artists impressions of such a device certainly excited many in the tech world.
Samsung filing for a new trademark does not automatically mean that there will be such a device, but an executive of an unnamed Samsung business partner did recently reveal that the Note would be offered with two different form factors, one with a curved OLED display for niche markets, and one with a regular flat OLED display for mass marketing.
Samsung has toyed with curved displays before with the Samsung Galaxy Round, but poor sales of the device made Samsung re-evaluate curved screens, but a curved Galaxy Note would match up with previous statements about there being a new form factor for the Note line of smartphones, and it would certainly be one way to differentiate their flagship from competitors such as the LG G3, and the upcoming 5.5-inch Apple iPhone 6.
The new Galaxy Note phones are expected to be announced at the Samsung Unpacked event which will be held simultaneously in NYC, Berlin, and Beijing on Sept. 3.
