Today is shaping up to be a pretty good day in the software world of smartphones. Obviously, the big news is that the Motorola Droid X’s Android 2.2 update will be rolling out tomorrow but that shouldn’t overshadow the fact that other phones are receiving updates as well.
AT&T’s Samsung Captivate in particular.
Unfortunately, the update that AT&T is going to be pushing out in batches of 15,000 until Friday isn’t Froyo nor is it a fix for the GPS issues, but it’s still a fairly decent update nonetheless. The update is going to be 12MB and it will take your Captivate from version I897UCJF6 to I897UCJH7.
And here, courtesy of Android Central, is what it includes:
· Preinstalled software - QuickOffice for Android will allow users to edit various Microsoft Office documents.
· Messaging - Exchange 2003 support, MMS and other messaging enhancements.
· Voice - Improved calling experience.
· Media - media scanning time improvements.
That’s actually not all that bad. Well, if you can look past the fact that it’s not Froyo, it doesn’t solve the GPS problem and apparently it doesn’t fix the freezing and device reset issue either. (That one is new to me, anyone experiencing this?)
So, if you own a Captivate, you might want to check to see if there is an update waiting for you. If there isn’t, expect it by Friday.

I attempted to install the update last night, and it bricked my phone. Ack!
Ugh. That's a bummer...really?!?
