The first round of the SAMMY awards is over in fan online voting and the judging areas move on and forward as well. I asked the one most connected person doing what she can for your music scene, Liz Nowak, about the numbers and how it works for those that may not know.

*See the link for my interview with Liz below along with several other local articles over the years*

The first round for the People’s Choice had around 300 bands and artists nominated by the fans or bands themselves while there were also around 60 venues.

To move to round 2, the top 64 bands and venues in the voting move on; think about it much like the NCAA men’s basketball tournament brackets in terms of voting. Each round is a clean slate, or no cumulative votes carry over, much like the basketball tourney. What you did last game has nothing to do with the next game.

Each round is cut in half so the next round will be pared down to 32 followed by 16, 8, the final four, the final 2 or, in basketball terms, the title game. Winner takes all. The winners of the fan voting in both Favorite Band and Favorite Venue will be announced at the SAMMY Awards Show at the Palace Theatre on Friday, March 7th. Tickets are on sale now. For all of the information you need check out the website here:

Second round voting begins on January 22nd, so go see who made it to the 2nd round and support your favorite band and venue there.
