News of Sam Worthington's acceptance of the role of the one and only "Dracula" in the Universal Pictures' Alex Proyas directed Dracula: Year Zero has rippled across the internet since its announcement earlier this week. The Australian Worthington has been one hot commodity in Hollywood these days since his role in the skyrocketing successful James Cameron feature Avatar and the upcoming Clash of the Titans. According to Bloody-Disgusting the film "chronicles the epic origin of Dracula, weaving vampire mythology with the true history of Prince Vlad the Impaler. It depicts Dracula as a flawed hero in a tragic love story set in a dark age of magic and war, repositioning him more as a vengeful hero than the monster seen in Bram Stoker's classic novel."
Alex Proyas is best known as a director of over 100 music videos as well as the iconic The Crow starring the late Brandon Lee and the 2004 action sci-fi flick I, Robot, which starred Will Smith. His unique cinematic style will no doubt create an interesting and unpredictable basis for the forthcoming Dracula: Year Zero project. Worthing definitely has an eye for blockbuster scripts these days so it is hopefully a safe bet that this film will be nothing less than entertaining. Details on the project remain sparse for the time being. More information is expected to be released in the coming months as the film is slated to begin production in 2011.
