We are still a few months away from the start of live racing at Sam Houston Race Park, but the news is good for the city's horse track. Coming off one of its most successful seasons in years, SHRP is poised for another big year.
SHRP announced its racing and stakes schedule on Tuesday, with another strong lineup that should make for another great meet, as well as a tweak to the weekly schedule.
Last year, Sam Houston debuted the $400,000 Ladies Classic, which was won by Joyful Victory, who went one to become one of the top mares in the country, winning the Grade I Santa Margarita at Santa Anita and Grade II Molly Pitcher at Monmouth.
The Classic returns this year as part of the Houston Racing Festival on Jan. 25, 2014. The card will also feature the Grade III Connally Turf Cup, the $75,000 Champion Energy Stakes and the $50,000 Allen's Landing. All three stakes produced quality horses who had success later in the year.
Overall, the 32-day thoroughbred meet offers 22 stakes with $1.7 million in purses. The track will go to a Friday, Saturday, Monday, Tuesday schedule. Mondays have been a huge hit nationally with simulcast fans, and Tuesdays should be the same. Post times will be 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 1 p.m. Monday and Tuesday.
You can find the full schedule here.
"We have been really pleased with the growth of Mondays since we added them
in 2011,” said SHRP President Andrea Young. “We are hoping to replicate some of that success with the
additions of Tuesdays this coming season.”
The thoroughbred meet will run from Friday January 17 through March 11. The 24-day quarter horse meet starts March 20 and ends May 11.
While live racing does not resume until January, simulcasting continues daily at the track. It is also open for holiday parties, and it's a great place for them. Visit SHRP.com for details or call 281-807-8700.
