Sam Houston Race Park picks for Saturday, Jan. 19

It's Texas Champions Day with several good stakes races and some nice big fields early in the card. I like the second, third and ninth races for possible long shots. Late pick three could pay well if you can beat Asmussen's horse in the 10th.

Good luck.

How to use the picks: We give you four horses. The numbers correspond to the program number or betting number. This isn't necessarily the order we think they will finish, but more the four horses we believe are the most likely contenders.

If you have read Acing Racing, we advocate trifecta, pick three and pick four wagering (buy the book if you want the strategies). If you are new to the game, try some simple exacta boxes. Take a horse of your own with two of mine and play a three-horse box ($6 on a $1 wager). Make sure you have at least one horse of 8-1 or higher in the bet.

More advanced players should use these selections as supplements to your own handicapping. Where possible we will mention when to key a horse and when to go deeper than four in your pick threes and fours.

FIRST

2-1-4-6

REDHOTRUSH has solid early foot, likes to win races and offers solid value

SECOND

7-8-5-6

UNDER OATH likes this track and the pace should set up for him

THIRD

3-5-6-7

MOJO MANIA threw in a clunker in last but priors were solid. Very wide open group; go deep in exotics

FOURTH

3-7-1a-4

POP CHART stretches out for Asmussen, gets Lasix and should fire a big one

FIFTH

3-5-4-9

Another wide open affair; FLASHAHOLIC finds a good spot for win No. 2

SIXTH

2-6-4-1

GOLD ELEMENT has been close in last two, is 3-for-4 at SHRP and trainer sends them ready

SEVENTH

7-6-5-1

WORLDVENTURER ran a big one in last against a solid group; repeat puts him in the mix

EIGHTH

1-5-2-4

Old timer COYOTE LEGEND has won more than half his starts, loves SHRP and should be tough

NINTH

4-10-2-7

Strong, competitive group with about seven potential winners. RED HOT QUEST seems primed for a big effort

TENTH

7-10-9-8

We’ll got for a mild upset in the get-out race with FLYING DANTRICK, whose debut was solid
