It was a bittersweet day for ‘GMA’s Sam Champion as he said goodbye to the home that he has known for many years. He had his very last day on the set of “GMA” this morning and it was a tearful one, as expected. As reported by USA Today on Dec. 4, it was both a celebration and a sad departure for them all, including viewers.
Laughter and tears abounded this morning as Robin Roberts, George Stephanopoulos, Josh Elliot and Lara Spencer took a walk down memory lane. Champion started his gig back in 1989 and has made weather broadcasting a fun and interesting experience. He has braved the nasty weather elements and put himself out there in the high winds, rain and snow storms, but this is what he enjoys doing. He has also had quite the adventures on the morning show including roller coaster rides, swimming with sharks and dressing up as many interesting characters.
The blond weather anchor mentioned how much fun he has had with being out in the New York crowd during his years on “GMA.” His final check of the weather was complete with a crowd of freezing people outside of the studio holding up Sam Champion faces to say their farewell.
Champion’s hearty laugh has brought America such happiness over the years. He will certainly be remembered for that characteristic of his. Of course, that laugh will go with him to the Weather Channel, which he says is his ultimate dream job. He will be a managing editor there while also providing weather details and traveling the world doing it.
Ginger Zee will step in to fill the empty spot left by him. She has some big shoes to fill but she has already made her mark on the morning show. She was in Denver braving the freezing temperatures during the farewell show. Champion gave her his love and some tips on staying warm and dry out in the extreme weather via satellite. One thing we learned about Ms. Zee is that she was named after Ginger from ‘Gilligan’s Island.’ This weather girl seems like good fit for the show.
Of course, Josh Elliot seemed to be the most emotional of the crew as the two guys have a special friendship which has been deemed a ‘bromance.’ The men hugged and shed some tears on air. The whole crew shed tears of both sadness to see him leave his ABC home and happiness for their friend and co-worker that is going off to live his dream.
Sam Champion will be missed so much! Good luck to him on his brand new adventure on the Weather Channel.
