On Dec. 2, ABC News President Ben Sherwood announced that beloved ABC meteorologist Sam Champion is leaving “Good Morning America” with the following official statement on

I am writing with important news. Our friend and colleague Sam Champion is leaving ABC News for a new opportunity at The Weather Channel. He will become the on-air face of the network, appearing as a host and serving as managing editor. Sam calls it a once in a lifetime opportunity.

Only seconds later, Sam Champion confirmed his big move from “GMA” to The Weather Channel by posting on Twitter on Monday:

Only an amazing opportunity like this at @weatherchannel cld take me away from my @ABC family of 25 years and @GMA. #blessed.

Champion has been part of the ABC family ever since he joined powerhouse station WABC in 1988. After a successful 18-year run, he then joined “GMA” in 2006, where he has broadcast more than 1,800 weather forecasts and traveled to almost every major weather event in the U.S. In fact, Sam Champion was a major contributor during Hurricane Sandy, for which ABC won the coveted Peabody Award for stellar on-air reporting during the record-breaking storm. To see Sam Champion explain why Sandy was such an historic weather event, be sure to watch the video above and to the left.

Ginger Zee, Sam’s storm chasing partner, will step in to fill his shoes at “Good Morning America.” The early morning news show will celebrate Champion’s last broadcast on Wednesday, Dec. 4. “While he is leaving ABC News, he will always be a part of our family,” Sherwood added.

Josh Elliott, GMA’s News Anchor and Champion's good friend, tweeted on Monday…

I love you, @SamChampion, as a friend and brother, and will greatly miss working with you. Through happy tears, I wish you the very best…

Robin Roberts posted the following message on Twitter around 12:30 on Dec. 2...

Need more than 140 characters Twitter allows to express how I feel about @SamChampion. True friend and more. Excited for his new chapter. XO.

George Stephanopoulos tweeted

Congrats Sam! Big adventure for you. We’ll miss you!

In turn, The Weather Channel tweeted its excitement about Sam Champion and posted on Dec. 2…

We are excited to welcome Sam Champion to The Weather Channel family!

Fellow TWC meteorologist Stephanie Abrams posted on Twitter

Welcome to the fam, @SamChampion!

So, it looks like Sam is pulling up his stakes in NYC and moving to Atlanta, home of The Weather Channel, very soon. Since 1982, TWC has brought timely weather forecasts and information to the world. The Weather Channel has the largest meteorology staff in broadcasting including thirty on-camera meteorologists and several on-air experts with advanced degrees in their fields. Rounding out the on-air talent are correspondents and media professionals well versed on weather, climate and related topics.

Sam Champion will join Jim Cantore, Stephanie Abrams and Al Roker as one of 110 meteorologists at The Weather Channel. Look for in-field reports, as well as studio broadcasts from Champion, The Weather Channel’s newest star.
