A new report states the real reason Sam Champion left "GMA" for The Weather Channel. TMZ published a Dec. 5 report after speaking with ABC insiders close to the situation. There are apparently various factors behind Champion's decision to leave the highly rated morning news program.
The celebrity news site reports that Champion has been "chronically unhappy at 'GMA.'" He even wanted his own show on ABC, but executives weren't interested in doing that.
TMZ's sources claim Champion "loves power and becoming managing editor (of The Weather Channel) gives him that." He will be anchoring the new flagship morning show and take on managing editor responsibilities.
Champion was said to be "shocked" when he wasn't a candidate to replace Larry King at CNN. That might be something that stuns viewers to learn.
On a personal note, Champion and husband want to start a family and his husband is unwilling to leave Florida "GMA" is taped in New York. The Weather Channel is based in Atlanta. With this new job at Weather Channel, Champion will be able to spend half his time in Miami to bond with the kids.
As for the salary Champion will bring in at Weather Channel, it will be about the same it was at "GMA," which was $2.5 million.
