Salvation Army at forefront of efforts at site of Japan quake

The Salvation Army has announced that it has formed a special relief hotline for those wishing to donate to relief efforts at the site of the Japanese quake and tsunami. While costs of the disaster so far are in the multi-billions, the toll on the Japanese economy is ongoing due to fractures in the nation's infrastructure and the ever-present threat of nuclear meltdown at its reactors, many of which are located near the regions hardest hit.

Those wishing to help with relief efforts can donate at The Salvation Army's special online page designed specifically for the Japanese effort, or by texting the words 'Japan' or 'Quake' at 80888 to make an automatic donation of $10. SA has also set up a blog page for readers to learn about their ongoing efforts to help those impacted by the quake.

The ongoing threat to Japanese society resulting from the quake and tsunami cannot be over-emphasized. Today news reports indicate that one of the nation's major nulcear power facilities experienced an explosion resulting in a radiation leakage. Citizens in the area are being evacuated. Although the government maintains the risk from radiation is minimal, residents up to 20 km away are ordered to be evacuated, indicating a much worse scenario than what officials are telling the pulblic.

In addition, in one of the coastal cities harest hit by the tsunami, nearly 10,000 of the area's 17,000 residents are missing and feared dead.

50 miles away from the areas hardest hit residents report that they still have electricity, Internet access, and cell phone service, but running water is scarce.

Disasters such as these require the action of organizations with wide experience in providing relief. For nearly 150 years the Salvation Army has been at the forefront of voluntary faith-based social action on behalf of the poor, the sick and hungry, and those who are victims of natural and man-made disasters.

Those wishing to speak to SA representatives concerning donating to relief efforts are urged to call 1-800-SAL-ARMY.
