Fashion continues to make huge strides in philanthropy. One of the largest organizations to make an impact on fashion is the Council of Fashion Designers of America. Composed of some of the most highly respected designers of all time, the work and dedication of the organization that spills forth is remarkable.

We are all very familiar with a heartwarming campaign known as 'Fashion Targets Breast Cancer.' The name and the symbol originated with Ralph Lauren, and over the years, has become synonymous with the CFDA as they display their dedication to finding a cure for breast cancer.

The initial campaign took place in September of 1994 and was supported by some of the most prominent figures in fashion and politics. Successfully, $2 million was raised and that set off a trend that, thankfully, has never subsided.

Now as the 20 year anniversary of the campaign is underway, the big announcement of its newest 2014 Ambassador came towards the end of the week of August 17, 2014. Maria Sharapova, professional tennis player and ranked #6th best player in the entire world by Women's Tennis Association, is the lucky recipient. She is an energetic champion who never gives up and refuses to be defeated, a perfect mentor and candidate for the newest position. She has participated in the London 2012 Olympics and broken records with her positive attitude and astute skills. Sharapova has branched out into fashion and modeled for the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue, Nike, Prince, Canon, not to mention chic fashion houses such as Cole Haan.

The blond queen of sports is ecstatic to be able to spread the word and bring awareness to an issue that continues to haunt us, breast cancer. Four images of the tennis superstar impress with Maria clothed in styles from CFDA designers that we are very familiar with; Derek Lam, Calvin Klein Collection, The Row and Jennifer Fisher Jewelry. The stylist for the shoot was Ketevan Gvaramadze and photographer was Michael Beauplet. Milk Studios in Los Angeles provided the setting. The national advertisement will run in 2014 October, November, and December publications including the October issues of Vogue and Vanity Fair and the September 14th issue of T Magazine.

Many familiar faces have worn the 'Fashion Targets Breast Cancer' t-shirt in the past. Models such as Gisele Bundchen and Kate Moss as well as entertainers such as Kylie Minogue have been honored to wear the shirt as strong advocates.

Not only is the campaign enjoying success here in the United States, but it has grown internationally in Australia, Brazil, Canada, Cyprus, Greece, Ireland, Mexico, Portugal, the United Kingdom and Mexico.

Being charitable and taking on the role of Ambassador comes easy to Maria Sharapova. She is United Nations Development Programme Goodwill Ambassador and is very active in the Chernobyl Recovery & Development Programme.

Let's all raise our rackets and put that fashion foot forward to support 'Fashion Targets Breast Cancer.' The cure for breast cancer is within our grasp. We can defeat the disease.
