Atlanta residents have a great resource in the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area in the northern portion of the metro region. That string of parks provides a number of options for outdoor fun along the stream's shore.
But, Atlanta is not the only Deep South capital city with great river parks. Just to the east along Interstate 85 lies Columbia, South Carolina. The Saluda Shoals Park on the shores of the Saluda River in the city's northwest suburbs is on par with any such facility in the South.
The park is located on the river 1.5 miles south of the Lake Murray Dam and just off Bush River Road. Spreading across 400 acres of forested terrain the park offers a great mix of developed and natural areas for a variety of recreational pursuits.
On the wild side Saluda Shoals has hiking and horseback trails, an Environmental Education facility, boat ramp on the river, fishing areas, and kayak and canoe landings. Visitors can even rent those paddle craft for some fun on the water.
On the more civilized side, for the kids there is a covered playground. Also, you find picnic pavilions and a 2.1-mile paved bike path. Of particular interest to the youngsters in the warmer months is the Saluda Splash water park.
Saluda Shoals Park is open daily, year round, with the exception of New Year’s Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day.
