Saltwater fishing tips: Matagorda Bay, jig heads and hook sizes

An important tip when drifting East Bay is to stay away from the crystal clear water. Look for murky or off color water and your chances of catching fish will be greatly improved.

“I've discovered a new lure for drifting and have caught some pretty decent sized trout on it,” says Capt. Tommy Countz. “It’s called a Maniac Mullet and is made by Tidal Surge Lures, makers also of the Crazy Croaker. It comes in a fast sinker and a slow sinker. The fast sinker I use when drifting and the slow sinker I intend to throw while wading in shallower water. I only place that I know handles them is Cast and Blast (a small bait, tackle, and gun shop) in Bay City on Hwy 60 south. I'm pretty impressed with the lure.”

Jig heads and size of hooks

1/8 or 1/4 oz—which one to use…1/8 oz is a lighter jig head and allows it to stay in the strike zone a little longer; 1/4 oz. will probably reach the bottom. Some people use 1/4 oz. for fishing the entire water column. An 1/8 oz is good for wading in say 3 ft. of water, allows the bait to suspend.

Hooks…jig head hook size takes fishing to another degree. The 4/0, 3/0, 2/0 are popular hook sizes. As a rule of thumb, use a 3/0 hook. For most anglers, the weight and color is more important than hook size.

The length of the hook placed in the bait gives either less action or more action to the soft plastic. If you use a 2/0, it allows more wobble. A 4/0 hook usually goes all the way through the entire body of the soft plastic bait, thus limiting the wobble, action of the bait.
